How vain it is to sit down to write when you haven't stood up to live?

Hate to throw Adam Jude under the bus—he’s actually one of my favorite sports writers in the state of Oregon—but one of his most recent tweets made me instantaneously cringe. Cracking a “sniper” joke is in pretty poor taste regardless if you ask me (especially considering the caution one usually takes as a recent hire at the Oregonian, the state’s top media outlet), but this has nothing to do with being sensitive about horrific memories of the DC-area killing spree. Little did Jude know, a real sniper actually committed homicide in the same exact area on campus back in the day. It was a story before my time, yet a story that jolted the university and the entire city of Eugene. Heard about it early during my frosh year as a young Duck.
